What Should You Do in a Disaster?
Responses vary depending on the type of disaster — earthquakes, sediment disasters (Landslide), or water-related disasters (Flood) — as well as by neighborhood.
In the Event of an Earthquake
What to do during the first 30 minutes immediately following an earthquake occurrence:
1. Secure Your Own Safety 2. Prevent Fires 3. Confirm Family Safety
Please check the earthquake status via television, radio, internet, etc.
In the event of an earthquake with a **seismic intensity of upper 5 or stronger**, an evacuation shelter will be opened.
→ Gather at your neighborhood's designated meeting location 30
minutes after the earthquake, then evacuate together to the shelter. Gather at each neighborhood's assembly point 30 minutes after the earthquake occurs and evacuate to the shelter.
- ⚠️To ensure there is absolutely no secondary damage from fires, be sure to check **electricity, gas, heating equipment, and the kitchen** before leaving your home to go to the assembly point (remind each other of this again at the assembly point).
In the Event of a Sediment Disaster (Landslide)
The emergency alerts for sediment disasters target
only the following 3 areas:
"Rokuchome (East of Higashioji)", "Yugimae-cho (East of Higashioji)", and "Kiyomizu-Shinmichi"
Please ignore sediment disaster warning the emergency alert if you live in neighborhoods other than the above (they are not applicable).
Please note that the Yasuragi-Fureai-Kan evacuation shelter will be open and ready for evacuation as soon as the emergency alert is sent.
- ⚠️Depending on heavy rain, having to walk on slopes, or the time of day, going outside to reach the shelter could be dangerous (and staying indoors may be safer). Please use your discretion.
In the Event of a Water-Related Disaster (Flood)
The emergency alert for water-related disasters target the following areas[cite: 7]:
West of "Rokuhara-hondori (in front of Rokuharamitsuji Temple)"
Naka-Yumiya-cho, Nishi-Yumiya-cho, Daikoku-cho, Kitagomon-cho, Yamashiro-cho, Otowa-cho, Yakushi-cho, Kitayamazaki-cho, Nakayamazaki-cho, Minamiyamazaki-cho, Sanchome, Kadowaki-cho, Mitsumori-cho, Ikedono-cho
Please ignore water disaster warning the emergency aler if you live in neighborhoods other than the above (not applicable).
Even within each targeted neighborhood, it is considered that above-floor inundation will not occur unless there is a once-in-1,000-years heavy rainfall.
**If you are on the 2nd floor or higher of a building, there is no need to evacuate.**
- ⚠️If you feel uneasy about sheltering at home, you can also evacuate to the Rokuhara Gakusha evacuation shelter.
